It is a [telephone](/source/Telephone) company which also offers local and long distance phone service through VoIP, as well as [internet](/source/Internet) services, [e-mail](/source/E-Mail) services, and [digital TV](/source/Digital_TV) service; it operates in small towns and rural areas throughout the upper [midwestern](/source/Midwestern_United_States) [United States](/source/United_States). It serves parts of [Houston](/source/Houston_County,_Minnesota), [Fillmore](/source/Fillmore_County,_Minnesota), and [Winona](/source/Winona_County) Counties in [Minnesota](/source/Minnesota); in [Iowa](/source/Iowa), it serves parts of [Allamakee](/source/Allamakee_County,_Iowa), [Winneshiek](/source/Winneshiek_County), and [Fayette](/source/Fayette_County,_Iowa) Counties.[1] It also owns and operates Ace Telephone Company of Michigan, Inc., in [Mesick, Michigan](/source/Mesick,_Michigan) serving northwestern [Michigan](/source/Michigan) in the [Wexford](/source/Wexford_County,_Michigan), [Manistee](/source/Manistee_County,_Michigan) and [Benzie County](/source/Benzie_County) region, along with [South Boardman, Michigan](/source/South_Boardman,_Michigan). It also operates in [Allendale, Michigan](/source/Allendale,_Michigan) serving [Michigan](/source/Michigan) in the [Ottawa](/source/Ottawa_County,_Michigan) region. In addition, it also operates Ace Link Telecommunications, Inc., which serves the city of [Caledonia](/source/Caledonia,_Minnesota), Minnesota. As an [Internet service provider](/source/Internet_service_provider), it also has non-telephone customers within its local dialing area. For internet service, in some parts, especially rural ones, it is the only ISP available. In addition, it provides internet and VoIP services to select areas through a [fiber-optical network](/source/Fiber-optic_Internet). In many areas, Ace still operates [digital subscriber lines](/source/Digital_subscriber_line) (DSL) over old copper phone lines. It was formed in 1950 as a rural [cooperative](/source/Cooperative) to improve telephone service in [Fillmore County, Minnesota](/source/Fillmore_County,_Minnesota). It subsequently absorbed a number of other small providers. In 1956 it adopted the "Ace" name, however in 2014, the cooperative changed their consumer-facing name to "AcenTek", a combination of the words ascending and technology. Ace, however, is still used as a nickname from time to time. Currently, it has over 24,000 subscribers.
