'''Acanthurini''' is a [tribe](/source/Tribe_(biology)) of marine [ray-finned fish](/source/ray-finned_fish)es belonging to the [family](/source/Family_(taxonomy)) [Acanthuridae](/source/Acanthuridae) and it is one of three tribes in the [subfamily](/source/subfamily) [Acanthurinae](/source/Acanthurinae).

== Etymology ==
The tribe name comes from [Ancient Greek](/source/Ancient_Greek) ἄκανθα (''ákantha''), meaning "spine", and οὐρά (''ourá''), meaning "tail", a reference to the scalpel-like bony plates on the [type species](/source/type_species)' [caudal peduncle](/source/caudal_peduncle).

==Taxonomy==
Acanthurini was first proposed as a taxon in 1839 by the French [naturalist](/source/naturalist) [Charles Lucien Bonaparte](/source/Charles_Lucien_Bonaparte)<ref name = Scudder/> and in 1993 it was delineated by the American [ichthyologist](/source/ichthyologist) [Richard Winterbottom](/source/Richard_Winterbottom_(ichthyologist)) as consisting of the two genera ''Acanthurus'' and ''Ctaenochaetus'', alongside the [monotypic](/source/Monotypic_taxon) tribe [Prionurini](/source/Prionurus) and with the remaining two [Acanthurine](/source/Acanthurinae) genera, ''[Zebrasoma](/source/Zebrasoma)'' and ''[Paracanthurus](/source/Paracanthurus)'', being classified in the tribe [Zebrasomini](/source/Zebrasomini).<ref name = WInterbottom>{{cite journal|author=Richard Winterbottom |year=1993 |title=Myological Evidence for the Phylogeny of Recent Genera of Surgeonfishes (Percomorpha, Acanthuridae), with Comments on the Acanthuroidei |journal=Copeia |volume=1993 |issue=1 |pages=21–39|doi=10.2307/1446292 |jstor=1446292 }}</ref> These tribes make up the subfamily Acanthurinae which with the subfamily [Nasinae](/source/Naso_(fish)) make up the family Acanthuridae.<ref name = Nelson5/>

==Genera==
There are two genera within the tribe Acanthurini:<ref name = Nelson5>{{cite book |title=Fishes of the World |edition=5th |author1=J. S. Nelson |author2=T. C. Grande |author3=M. V. H.
