{{Short description|1973 social experiment}}
The '''''Acali'' expedition''' (or '''''Acali'' experiment'''<ref>''Storyville: The Raft'', BBC4, 2 Jun 2019</ref> or the '''Sex Raft'''<ref name="sexraft"/>) was a 1973 social experiment that aimed to investigate interpersonal relationships in conditions of limited space and social isolation.<ref>''The Acali Experiment: Five Men And Six Women On A Raft Across The Atlantic For 101 Days'', by Santiago Genoves</ref><ref name="sexraft">{{cite news |last1=Jeffries |first1=Stuart |title=Mutiny on the Sex Raft: how a 70s science project descended into violent chaos |url=https://www.theguardian.com/film/2019/jan/14/mutiny-on-the-sex-raft-70s-experiment-santiago-genoves |accessdate=2 June 2019 |work=The Guardian |date=14 Jan 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250501072049/https://www.theguardian.com/film/2019/jan/14/mutiny-on-the-sex-raft-70s-experiment-santiago-genoves|archive-date=1 May 2025|url-status=live}}</ref><ref>{{Cite news|url=https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2019/jun/02/storyville-the-raft-review-almost-too-deliciously-ludicrous-to-be-true|title=Storyville: The Raft review – almost too deliciously ludicrous to be true|last=Mangan|first=Lucy|date=2 June 2019|work=The Guardian|access-date=2 June 2019|language=en-GB|issn=0261-3077}}</ref> The experiment was conceived by Mexican [anthropologist](/source/anthropologist) [Santiago Genovés](/source/Santiago_Genov%C3%A9s), who had previously been a crew member of [Thor Heyerdahl](/source/Thor_Heyerdahl)'s ''Ra'' expedition. The participants showed a restraint towards aggression, which frustrated Genovés and led him to start to try to create conflict, and at one point he took command of the float. Despite these attempts, the group remained peaceful.<ref>https://www.svtplay.se/video/23019602/flotten?info=visa {{Dead link|date=February 2022}}</ref>

The raft had a complement of eleven people: five men and six women. It left [Las Palmas](/source/Las_Palmas), Spain, on 12 May 1973 and took 101 days to drift across the [Atlantic Ocean](/source/Atlantic_Ocean) and reach [Cozumel](/source/Cozumel), Mexico, with a single stopover in [Barbados](/source/Barbados). Frequently dubbed the "'''Sex Raft'''" by the media,<ref name="sexraft"/> it was the subject of a 2018 [documentary film](/source/documentary_film) ''The Raft'', by Marcus Lindeen.

==The Raft==
The name of the raft, ''Acali'', comes from the [Nahuatl](/source/Nahuatl) language and means "the house on the water".<ref name=ABC1>[http://hemeroteca.sevilla.abc.es/cgi-bin/pagina.pdf?fn=exec;command=stamp;path=H:%5Ccran%5Cdata%5Cprensa_pages%5CMadrid%5CBlanco%20y%20Negro%5C1973%5C197309%5C19730901%5C73S01-037.xml;id=0005345997 ''Balsa Acali: 100 días de convivencia en el mar'']{{Dead link|date=June 2020 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }} ''hemeroteca.sevilla.abc.es'', accessed 7 November 2019</ref><ref>"New Transdisciplinary Visualities As an Alternative to Redistribute the Power of Thought", by Maris
Bustamante, ''Social Justice'' 2006, '''33'''(2), 165-170</ref>

The raft was built specifically for the experiment. It had a steel hull and dimensions of 12 by 7 metres. The cabin measured 4 × 4 metres. It was designed by José Antonio Mandri and [Colin Mudie](/source/Colin_Mudie), and it was built in [Newcastle upon Tyne](/source/Newcastle_upon_Tyne), England.<ref name=EXP>[http://armandorubenpuente.com/download_file/view/283/369.pdf ''Experimento Acali: Viaje a las entrañas de la violencia''] ''armandorubenpuente.com'', accessed 7 November 2019</ref>
