'''Academic training''' ('''AT''') is a type of off-campus work authorization for students in [J-1](/source/J-1_visa) status. The J-1 is a status for students and exchange visitors that is part of the [Student and Exchange Visitor Program](/source/Student_and_Exchange_Visitor_Program) managed by the [U.S. Department of State](/source/U.S._Department_of_State) in collaboration with [U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement](/source/U.S._Immigration_and_Customs_Enforcement) in the [United States](/source/United_States).<ref name=Uscis>{{cite web|url=https://www.uscis.gov/working-united-states/students-and-exchange-visitors/exchange-visitors|title = U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services|accessdate = September 20, 2016|publisher = [USCIS](/source/USCIS)}}</ref> The AT program is used by J-1 students for employment training or practical experience directly related to the student's current major specialty.<ref name=dep>{{cite web|url=http://j1visa.state.gov/participants/common-questions|title = Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs|accessdate = September 20, 2016|publisher = [The United States Department of State](/source/The_United_States_Department_of_State)}}</ref><ref name=gu>{{cite web|url=https://internationalservices.georgetown.edu/at|title = International Student & Scholar Services|accessdate = September 20, 2016|publisher = [Georgetown University](/source/Georgetown_University)}}</ref>

AT is the opportunity for J-1 students to apply knowledge gained in the program of study to off-campus work.<ref name="gu"/> AT may include, but isn't limited to, internships, practicums and cooperative education.<ref name=dep />

AT is the analogue of [Optional Practical Training](/source/Optional_Practical_Training) for students on a J-1 visa status. A student cannot simultaneously be eligible for Optional Practical Training (also known as OPT) and Academic Training: OPT is for [F-1 visa](/source/F-1_visa) and [M-1 visa](/source/M-1_visa) students, whereas AT is for [J-1 visa](/source/J-1_visa) students.
