'''''Abroma''''' is a [genus](/source/genus) of [flowering plant](/source/flowering_plant)s in the family [Malvaceae](/source/Malvaceae). It includes a single species, '''''Abroma augustum''''',<ref name = powo1/> sometimes written ''Abroma augusta'',<ref>{{Citation |title=Sterculiaceae ''Abroma augustum'' (L.) L.f. |url=http://www.ipni.org/ipni/idPlantNameSearch.do?id=822006-1 |access-date=2016-03-22}}</ref> and commonly known as '''devil's cotton'''. It is a shrub or tree native to tropical Asia, ranging from the Himalayas and southern China through Indochina and [Malesia](/source/Malesia) to New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.<ref name = powo2/>

''Abroma augustum'' has dark red flowers with a characteristic and unusual appearance. The leaves and stems are covered with soft bristly hairs that are very irritating to the touch. The bark yields a jute-like fiber. It is used as a traditional medicinal plant.<ref>{{cite Banglapedia |article=Flora |author=M Iqbal Zuberi}}</ref>

==Taxonomy==
The species was first described as ''Theobroma augustum'' (or ''Theobroma augusta'') by [Carl Linnaeus](/source/Carl_Linnaeus) in 1768.<ref>{{Citation |title=Sterculiaceae ''Theobroma augustum'' L. |url=http://www.ipni.org/ipni/idPlantNameSearch.do?id=825562-1 |access-date=2019-05-26}}</ref>

The genus was described by [Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin](/source/Nikolaus_Joseph_von_Jacquin) in 1776<ref>{{citation |url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/10251#page/7/mode/1up |title=Hortus botanicus vindobonensis |chapter=''Abroma fastuosum'' |volume=3 |pages=3–4 |year=1776}}</ref> with a single species ''Abroma fastuosum'', which was illustrated and described.<ref>{{citation |chapter-url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/10251#page/57/mode/1up |title=Hortus botanicus vindobonensis |chapter=Tab 1 |volume=3 |year=1776}}</ref> However, because Jacquin was renaming ''Theobroma augusta'' L., according to the [International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants](/source/International_Code_of_Nomenclature_for_algae%2C_fungi%2C_and_plants), he was required to use the name ''Abroma augustum'', and ''A. fastuosum'' is [an illegitimate name](/source/Nomen_illegitimum).<ref>{{citation |url=http://botany.si.edu/ing/ |title=Index Nominum Genericorum |accessdate=30 September 2016}}</ref> The correct name of the [type species](/source/type_species), ''A. augustum'' (L.) L. f., was made in 1782 by [Carl Linnaeus the Younger](/source/Carl_Linnaeus_the_Younger). ''Ambroma'' is an [orthographic variant](/source/Orthographical_variant).<ref name = powo2/>
