**Abidjan Department** ([French](/source/French_language): *Département d'Abidjan*, pronounced [\[depaʁtəmɑ̃ d‿abidʒɑ̃\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/French)) is a [department](/source/Departments_of_Ivory_Coast) of [Ivory Coast](/source/Ivory_Coast). It is the sole department in [Abidjan Autonomous District](/source/Abidjan_Autonomous_District), which is coextensive with the department.[3]

## History

Abidjan Department upon its creation in 1969. It kept these boundaries until 1988, but other departments began to be divided in 1974.

Abidjan Department from 1988 until 1998. (Other subdivision boundaries changed beginning in 1995.)

Abidjan Department was created in 1969 as one of the 24 new departments that were created to take the place of the six departments that were being abolished. It was created from territory that was formerly part of [Sud Department](/source/Sud_Department_(Ivory_Coast)). Using current boundaries as a reference, from 1969 to 1988 the department encompassed all of the [Abidjan Autonomous District](/source/Abidjan_Autonomous_District); all of [Grands-Ponts Region](/source/Grands-Ponts_Region); all of [Agnéby-Tiassa Region](/source/Agn%C3%A9by-Tiassa_Region), with the exception of [Agboville Department](/source/Agboville_Department); and [Alépé Department](/source/Al%C3%A9p%C3%A9_Department) in [La Mé Region](/source/La_M%C3%A9_Region).

Abidjan Department was divided into three parts in 1988 in order to create [Grand-Lahou Department](/source/Grand-Lahou_Department) and [Tiassalé Department](/source/Tiassal%C3%A9_Department).[4]

In 1997, [regions](/source/Regions_of_Ivory_Coast) were introduced as new first-level subdivisions of Ivory Coast; as a result, all departments were converted into second-level subdivisions. Abidjan Department was included as part of [Lagunes Region](/source/Lagunes_Region). Abidjan Department was divided again in 1998 in order to create [Alépé](/source/Al%C3%A9p%C3%A9_Department), [Dabou](/source/Dabou_Department), and [Jacqueville Departments](/source/Jacqueville_Department).

In 2011, [districts](/source/Districts_of_Ivory_Coast) were introduced as new first-level subdivisions of Ivory Coast. At the same time, regions were reorganised and became second-level subdivisions and all departments were converted into third-level subdivisions. At this time, Abidjan Department became part of [Abidjan Autonomous District](/source/Abidjan_Autonomous_District), one of two districts in the country with no regions. Abidjan Department and the Abidjan Autonomous District share the same territory.[3]
