**Aberthin** is a small village, just outside [Cowbridge](/source/Cowbridge) in the [Vale of Glamorgan](/source/Vale_of_Glamorgan), [South Wales](/source/South_Wales), on the north side of a shallow valley, less than a mile northeast of [Cowbridge](/source/Cowbridge) across the [A48 road](/source/A48_road).[1] [Cowbridge Comprehensive School](/source/Cowbridge_Comprehensive_School) lies just to the southwest of the village. About 250 metres to the south is an old quarry, with a "faulted strip of grey [oolite](/source/Oolite)".[2] Aberthin is also the name of a brook, the [River Aberthin](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=River_Aberthin&action=edit&redlink=1).[3] The village was served by the [Aberthin Platform railway station](/source/Aberthin_Platform_railway_station) between 1905 and 1920, now a field to the west of Aberthin.

## Etymology

[Thomas Morgan](/source/Thomas_Morgan_(Afanwyson)) recorded an early belief that the village had been a place of [druidic sacrifices](/source/Druid), and that the name derived from the word *Abertha* (sacrifice). However, this derivation is now considered a [folk etymology](/source/Folk_etymology).[4] As the Nant y Berthyn's confluence (or "[Aber](/source/Aber_and_Inver_(placename_elements))" in Welsh) with the [River Thaw](/source/River_Thaw) located just to the west of the village's centre, the name is most likely a contraction of "Aber-Nant-y-Berthyn".

## Notable landmarks

It has no shops, but does have two [pubs](/source/Pub), a [village hall](/source/Village_hall) which when built in 1749 was created as Wales's second purpose-built [Calvinistic Methodist](/source/Calvinistic_Methodists) meeting house,[5] and a notable tree in the middle of the roundabout. The Methodist church and village was visited in 1746 by [Howell Harries](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Howell_Harries&action=edit&redlink=1) and it was at the church where [Peter Williams](/source/Peter_Williams_(biblical_commentator)) gave a speech in which he was disowned by the Methodists.[6] Houses in the area include [Llansannor Court](/source/Llansannor_Court) and [Great House, Aberthin](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Great_House,_Aberthin&action=edit&redlink=1).[1]

## Culture

The village hall committee organises many events throughout the year, such as a duck race (where plastic yellow ducks are raced down the stream), a free [bonfire](/source/Bonfire) and [fireworks](/source/Fireworks) display (held on the Downs overlooking the village), quiz nights, amateur dramatics, [barn dances](/source/Barn_dance), and an annual Village Day, which has a [barbecue](/source/Barbecue), [live music](/source/Live_music) and a dog show.
