# Abdullah Awda

**Abdullah Awda** (Arabic: عبد الله عودة), also known by his *[nom de guerre](/source/Nom_de_guerre)* **Abu Zeid**, was a rebel leader in northern [Syria](/source/Syria) during the earlier stages of the [Syrian Civil War](/source/Syrian_Civil_War). He was the leader of the [Hazzm Movement](/source/Hazzm_Movement), part of the [Free Syrian Army](/source/Free_Syrian_Army).[2]

## Biography

Abdullah Awda held the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the [Syrian Arab Army](/source/Syrian_Arab_Army) (675th Battalion, 87th Brigade, 11th Division) when he defected in 2011 and subsequently joined the [Free Officers Movement](/source/Free_Officers_Movement_(Syria)) during the [Syrian Civil War](/source/Syrian_Civil_War).[1] He later became the leader of Farouq al-Shamal Battalions, who joined the [Syrian Revolutionaries Front](/source/Syrian_Revolutionaries_Front) in December 2013.[3]

From 2014, Awda commanded the [US](/source/United_States)-backed [Hazzm Movement](/source/Hazzm_Movement) in its fight against the [Islamic State](/source/Islamic_State).[2]

In January 2015, the [al-Nusra Front](/source/Al-Nusra_Front) attacked the Hazzm Movement in northern [Aleppo countryside](/source/Aleppo_Governorate), forcing it to dissolve. Awda, together with other rebel leaders, fled to [Turkey](/source/Turkey) and went in [exile](/source/Exile).[4]

On 16 December 2016, Awda and other leaders of groups ousted by al-Nusra declared their willingness to return to Syria. Their statement was handwritten and signed by Awda, [Jamal Maarouf](/source/Jamal_Maarouf) ([Syria Revolutionaries Front](/source/Syria_Revolutionaries_Front)), [Mithqal al-Abdullah](/source/Mithqal_al-Abdullah) (Ansar Brigades) and [Youssef al-Hassan](/source/Youssef_al-Hassan) (Haq al-Muqatila Front).[5]
