The '''Abbot's Chair''' is the common name of a former monastic cross, the [Charlesworth](/source/Charlesworth%2C_Derbyshire) Cross. Only the socket remains of this boundary cross, built by the monks of [Basingwerk Abbey](/source/Basingwerk_Abbey) in [North Wales](/source/North_Wales). [Henry II of England](/source/Henry_II_of_England) gave the manor of Glossop to the monks, and they gained a [market charter](/source/market_charter) for Glossop in 1290, and one for Charlesworth in 1328. In 1433 the monks leased all of [Glossopdale](/source/Glossopdale) to the Talbot family, later [Earls of Shrewsbury](/source/Earl_of_Shrewsbury).

It is close to the town of [Glossop](/source/Glossop) in the [High Peak](/source/High_Peak_(upland)) borough of the English county of [Derbyshire](/source/Derbyshire), on the so-called Monks Road,<ref name="Co1895">{{cite book|publisher=T. The monks used this route in order to reach [Hayfield](/source/Hayfield%2C_Derbyshire), [Simmondley](/source/Simmondley) and other villages.
