Bentham](/source/George_Bentham) & [J.D. Hooker](/source/Joseph_Dalton_Hooker) and [Hutchinson](/source/John_Hutchinson_(botanist)).
Its native range stretches from Mexico to northern Argentina. The valvate (meeting at the edges without overlapping) perianth ([sepal](/source/sepal) and [petal](/source/petal) together) members are closely joined at the base.
