# Abacus Data Systems

**Abacus Data Systems**, [doing business as](/source/Doing_business_as) **Caret** or **CARET** (formerly **AbacusNext**), is an American [software](/source/Software) and [private cloud](/source/Private_cloud) services provider headquartered in [San Diego](/source/San_Diego), California.

The company, doing business as AbacusNext, announced its rebranding in February[when?], now doing business as CARET.[2]

## Services and software

### Cloud

Abacus Private Cloud is a [private cloud](/source/Virtual_private_cloud) sold as [Desktop-as-a-Service](/source/Desktop_virtualization#Desktop_as_a_Service) within a [Windows Server 2012 R2](/source/Windows_Server_2012_R2) environment. This service relies on [Veeam Software](/source/Veeam_Software) for backup support, and is built on [Intel](/source/Intel)-based architecture.[3]

This private cloud service is colocated across three carrier-neutral data centers that are interconnected via a self-run [optical network](/source/Fiber-optic_communication). These data centers are Scalematrix in [San Diego, California](/source/San_Diego,_California), Skybox Houston One in [Houston, Texas](/source/Houston,_Texas), and SUPERNAP by [Switch](/source/Switch_(company)) in [Las Vegas, Nevada](/source/Las_Vegas,_Nevada).[4]

### Software

AbacusNext offers four [Windows](/source/Windows)-based platforms, all of which rely on [relational database management systems](/source/Relational_database_management_system). Two are [law practice management software](/source/Law_practice_management_software) for [lawyers](/source/Lawyers); AbacusLaw uses [Advantage Database](/source/Advantage_Database_Server), while Amicus Attorney uses [Microsoft SQL Server](/source/Microsoft_SQL_Server).[5] AbacusNext has two platforms for [accounting](/source/Accounting) firms that rely on Microsoft SQL Server: ResultsCRM, a [customer relationship management](/source/Customer_relationship_management) for [QuickBooks](/source/QuickBooks), and OfficeTools practice management software.[6]

In December 2015, American [private equity](/source/Private_equity) investment firm [Providence Equity Partners](/source/Providence_Equity_Partners) took a strategic majority investment in AbacusNext (Abacus Data Systems at that time).[9]

## Acquisitions

In May 2016, AbacusNext acquired [Toronto](/source/Toronto)-based software company Gavel & Gown, makers of Amicus Attorney.[10]

Results Software, a Virginia-based software company and maker of ResultsCRM, was acquired in February 2017.[11] In the same month, the company also acquired [San Diego](/source/San_Diego)–based cloud hosting provider Cloudnine Realtime.[11] In May of that same year, it also acquired [Palmdale](/source/Palmdale)-based software company OfficeTools.[12]

In November 2017, the company acquired [Scotland](/source/Scotland)-based software company [HotDocs](/source/HotDocs).[13][14] HotDocs was previously owned by [LexisNexis](/source/LexisNexis) before being sold in 2009.[15] A month later, [New Hampshire](/source/New_Hampshire)–based software company Commercial Logic was acquired.[16]
