==Career==
Cardozo promoted the interests of the [British Government](/source/Her_Majesty's_Government) and as delegate of [Henry Edward Fox](/source/Henry_Edward_Fox), the [governor of Gibraltar](/source/governor_of_Gibraltar), concluded a treaty on 5 November 1805 with Sidi Mahomet of [Oran](/source/Oran) for provisioning the garrison of Gibraltar and the British squadron in the [Mediterranean](/source/Mediterranean_Sea). He proceeded to Oran on board the frigate ''Termagant'', which was placed at his disposal by [Lord Nelson](/source/Horatio_Nelson%2C_1st_Viscount_Nelson). Cardozo was successful in saving the lives of three [Royal Navy](/source/Royal_Navy) sailors who were imprisoned at Oran and sentenced to death. He negotiated a treaty between the [government of Portugal](/source/government_of_Portugal) and the bey of Tunis.

In 1824 Cardozo was created a knight of the [Legion of Honor](/source/L%C3%A9gion_d'honneur) by [Louis XVIII](/source/Louis_XVIII) of France and was rewarded with other orders of merit for his distinguished services.

==Mansion==

After settling in Gibraltar, Cardozo had a mansion built at [John Mackintosh Square](/source/John_Mackintosh_Square) as his family home.<ref name="benady18">(Benady, 18)</ref> The three-storey building was completed in 1819 and dominated John Mackintosh Square.<ref name=Bond>{{cite book | title=300 Years of British Gibraltar 1704–2004| first=Peter | last=Bond | publisher=Peter-Tan Publishing Co. | year=2003|pages=48}}</ref> It was erected on the site of the old hospital and chapel of ''La Santa Misericordia'' (''The Holy Mercy'') and later prison.<ref name=benady18 /> As a non-[Protestant](/source/Protestant), Cardozo was not legally allowed to own property in Gibraltar at the time. However, as he had been a close friend of Nelson and had supplied his fleet, he was eventually granted a site to build a house in the ''Alameda'' on the condition that it be "an ornament" to the square.<ref name=Bond/> Its cost was about [£](/source/pound_sterling)40,000.<ref name=Bond/>

Cardozo's mansion has become the [Gibraltar City Hall](/source/Gibraltar_City_Hall) and houses the [Mayor's](/source/Mayor_of_Gibraltar) Parlour.<ref name="benady19">(Benady, 19)</ref>
