***A Man Astray*** (German: ***Ein Mann auf Abwegen***) is a 1940 German [comedy](/source/Comedy_film) [adventure film](/source/Adventure_film) directed by [Herbert Selpin](/source/Herbert_Selpin) and starring [Hans Albers](/source/Hans_Albers), [Charlotte Thiele](/source/Charlotte_Thiele) and [Hilde Weissner](/source/Hilde_Weissner).[1][2] The film is an adaptation of the 1938 novel *Percy auf Abwegen* by [Hans Zehrer](/source/Hans_Zehrer). The sets were designed by the [art directors](/source/Art_director) [Paul Markwitz](/source/Paul_Markwitz) and [Fritz Maurischat](/source/Fritz_Maurischat). Shooting took place at the [Halensee Studios](/source/Halensee_Studios) in Berlin and the [Bavaria Studios](/source/Bavaria_Studios) in Munich, with additional [location shooting](/source/Location_shooting) around [Lake Starnberg](/source/Lake_Starnberg) in Bavaria. Produced and distributed by [Tobis Film](/source/Tobis_Film), one of [Nazi Germany](/source/Nazi_Germany)'s leading film companies, the film was a financial success. ## Synopsis

Percival Pattersson, a wealthy Swedish industrialist, disappears one morning without warning, and police suspect a crime. However, his daughter Ingrid and a journalist both suspect he has deliberately vanished and set out to track him down. Pattersson has in fact been laying low incognito but when his daughter approaches, he flees to [Geneva](/source/Geneva) posing as the [chauffeur](/source/Chauffeur) of the singer Lisaweta who he has fallen in love with.
