***A Life of Grime*** (a play on the expression *A Life of Crime*) is a [BBC](/source/BBC) [reality series](/source/Reality_television) following the work of [environmental health](/source/Environmental_health) inspectors.[1] Launched during an explosion of [reality television](/source/Reality_television), the idea found something of a [cult following](/source/Cult_following).

## Overview

With [Louis Armstrong](/source/Louis_Armstrong)'s "[What a Wonderful World](/source/What_a_Wonderful_World)" as the title music, the episodes were narrated by [John Peel](/source/John_Peel) and later by [Arthur Smith](/source/Arthur_Smith_(comedian)) in sardonic tones.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] Its appeal was based on disgust and the eccentric but often vivid and eloquent characters, most famously [Edmund Trebus](/source/Edmund_Trebus), encountered either hoarding rubbish or keeping huge numbers of animals.[1] The original series was set in [Haringey](/source/London_Borough_of_Haringey);[1] subsequent series have been set in [Bristol](/source/Bristol), [Salford](/source/City_of_Salford), [Sheffield](/source/Sheffield), [Tower Hamlets](/source/London_Borough_of_Tower_Hamlets), [City of Westminster](/source/City_of_Westminster), [New York](/source/New_York_City) and [Edinburgh](/source/Edinburgh).

## U.S. version

An American version of the series titled *A Life of Grime New York*, aired on the [Discovery Times Channel](/source/Discovery_Times_Channel) that takes place in New York.
