**A Gleam** (foaled 1949 in [Kentucky](/source/Kentucky)) was an American [Thoroughbred](/source/Thoroughbred) racehorse who set a [Hollywood Park Racetrack](/source/Hollywood_Park_Racetrack) record with five straight [stakes races](/source/Stakes_race) in 1952.[1]

## Breeding

A Gleam was bred and raced by [Calumet Farm](/source/Calumet_Farm). Her sire was [British](/source/United_Kingdom) born [Blenheim](/source/Blenheim_II), the winner of the 1930 [Epsom Derby](/source/Epsom_Derby) who, after being sold to an American breeding syndicate, became the [Leading sire in North America](/source/Leading_sire_in_North_America) in 1941. A Gleam's dam was Calumet's [U.S. Racing Hall of Fame](/source/National_Museum_of_Racing_and_Hall_of_Fame) inductee, [Twilight Tear](/source/Twilight_Tear).[2]

## Racing career

A Gleam was conditioned for racing by future U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee, [Jimmy Jones](/source/Horace_A._Jones). In 1951 at [Chicago's](/source/Chicago) [Washington Park Racetrack](/source/Washington_Park_Racetrack), she won the [Princess Pat Stakes](/source/Princess_Pat_Stakes), a top race for two-year-old fillies.[3]

It was as a three-year-old that she developed into one of the top fillies in the United States. Included in her five wins at Hollywood Park was [Milady Handicap](/source/Milady_Handicap) which she won in a [track record](/source/Glossary_of_North_American_horse_racing#Track_record.2FCourse_record) time of 1:21 3/5 for seven furlongs on dirt.[4] In her last year of racing at age four, A Gleam won the [Malibu Sequet Stakes](/source/Malibu_Stakes) at [Santa Anita Park](/source/Santa_Anita_Park) and her second straight edition of the Milady Handicap at Hollywood Park.

## Broodmare

A Gleam served as a [broodmare](/source/Broodmare) for Calumet Farm. Of her foals, the filly A Glitter (b. 1955), sired by [Khaled](/source/Khaled_(horse)), was a successful runner who won major races such as the [Coaching Club American Oaks](/source/Coaching_Club_American_Oaks), [Monmouth Oaks](/source/Monmouth_Oaks), and the [Modesty Handicap](/source/Modesty_Handicap). A Gleam's most successful earner in racing was sired by [Herbager](/source/Herbager). Their multiple stakes winning colt Gleaming (b. 1968) earned $469,245.[5]

## Honors

In 1979, [Hollywood Park Racetrack](/source/Hollywood_Park_Racetrack) renamed the Sequoia Handicap in A Gleam's honor.
