***A Girl at the Window*** ([French](/source/French_language): *Une jeune fille à la fenêtre*) is a Canadian drama film, directed by [Francis Leclerc](/source/Francis_Leclerc) and released in 2001.[1] The film stars [Fanny Mallette](/source/Fanny_Mallette) as Marthe, a young woman living in [Quebec City](/source/Quebec_City) in the 1920s; afflicted with an incurable heart condition which will eventually kill her, she is ostensibly in Quebec City to study classical piano, but decides to live for the moment and get more enjoyment out of the time she has after being exposed to the city's [jazz](/source/Jazz) nightclubs.[2]

The film's cast also includes [Hugues Frenette](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hugues_Frenette&action=edit&redlink=1), [Denis Bernard](/source/Denis_Bernard_(actor)), [Évelyne Rompré](/source/%C3%89velyne_Rompr%C3%A9), [Johanne-Marie Tremblay](/source/Johanne-Marie_Tremblay) and [Diane Dufresne](/source/Diane_Dufresne).[3]

Leclerc wrote the screenplay based loosely on his own sister, who herself died of a heart condition at a young age.[4] The film was shot in 2000,[5] and premiered at the 2001 [Montreal World Film Festival](/source/Montreal_World_Film_Festival).[6]
