***A Couple*** (French: ***Un couple***) is a 2022 French-language drama film directed by [Frederick Wiseman](/source/Frederick_Wiseman). Featuring a [solo performance](/source/Solo_performance) by [Nathalie Boutefeu](/source/Nathalie_Boutefeu) as [Sophia Tolstaya](/source/Sophia_Tolstaya), the wife of [Leo Tolstoy](/source/Leo_Tolstoy), the film consists of her monologues, which Wiseman and Boutefeu adapted from Tolstaya's letters and diaries. It is Wiseman's first narrative film since [The Last Letter](/source/The_Last_Letter_(2002_film)) (2002), and his first ever that is [shot on location](/source/Location_shooting) rather than being a filmed play.[2]

## Production

After working on a French-language production of *[The Belle of Amherst](/source/The_Belle_of_Amherst)*, Wiseman and Boutefeu developed the script based on Tolstaya's writings. The film was shot on [Belle-Île](/source/Belle-%C3%8Ele) off the coast of [Brittany](/source/Brittany).[2]

## Release

*A Couple* premiered in competition at the [79th Venice International Film Festival](/source/79th_Venice_International_Film_Festival) in September 2022.[2] It screened at the [New York Film Festival](/source/2022_New_York_Film_Festival) in October 2022,[3] and received a theatrical release at [Film Forum](/source/Film_Forum) in New York City in November 2022.[2]

On review aggregator website [Rotten Tomatoes](/source/Rotten_Tomatoes), the film holds an approval rating of 87%, based on 31 reviews, and an average rating of 7.1/10.[4] On [Metacritic](/source/Metacritic), the film has a weighted average score of 74 out of 100, based on 13 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.[5]
