- Emperor [John I](/source/John_I_Tzimiskes) delegates the war in the [Balkans](/source/Balkans) to his brother-in-law, the [Domestic of the Schools](/source/Domestic_of_the_Schools) [Bardas Skleros](/source/Bardas_Skleros), and to the eunuch general [Peter Phokas](/source/Peter_(stratopedarches)), who begin to gather a [Byzantine](/source/Byzantine_Empire) army in [Thrace](/source/Thrace_(theme)). At the news of this, a powerful Kievan expeditionary force (30,000 men), along with many [Bulgarians](/source/First_Bulgarian_Empire) and a [Pecheneg](/source/Pechenegs) contingent, is sent south over the [Balkan Mountains](/source/Balkan_Mountains).
