The '''8th Operational Support Unit''' (8OSU) is an [Australian Army](/source/Australian_Army) [logistics](/source/Military_logistics) unit that was raised in 2024. It forms part of the [2nd Division](/source/2nd_Division_(Australia)).

==History==

8OSU was raised on 15 January 2024, with its headquarters located at [Timor Barracks](/source/Timor_Barracks), [Dundas, New South Wales](/source/Dundas%2C_New_South_Wales). Its role is to assess the logistical needs of deployed units, including by conducting reconnaissance of areas before they arrive. This reflected a lesson learned from the [Australian Defence Force's](/source/Australian_Defence_Force) deployments in response to natural disasters in Australia, in which military units had sometimes caused shortages of fuel and other supplies in regional areas.<ref name="unit takes the pressure off">{{cite web |title=New unit takes the pressure off |url=https://www.defence.gov.au/news-events/news/2024-07-02/new-unit-takes-pressure |publisher=Department of Defence |access-date=22 December 2024 |date=2 July 2024}}</ref>

8OSU is staffed mainly by logistics experts and is able to hire equipment and establish contracts for services needed to support deployments.<ref name="unit takes the pressure off" />

In December 2024 the [2nd Force Support Battalion](/source/2nd_Force_Support_Battalion) was merged into 8OSU. This battalion included four sub-units in Tasmania and Victoria, and its personnel became part of 8OSU. The merger aimed to provide the 2nd Division with a specialist logistics capability.<ref>{{cite web |title=Merger a boost for division's logistics |url=https://www.defence.gov.au/news-events/news/2024-12-06/merger-boost-divisions-logistics |publisher=Department of Defence |access-date=22 December 2024 |date=6 December 2024}}</ref>
