It was discovered on 10 February 1999, by astronomers [Walter Cooney](/source/Walter_R._Cooney_Jr.) and [Ethan Kandler](/source/Ethan_Kandler) at the [Highland Road Park Observatory](/source/Highland_Road_Park_Observatory), in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States.<ref name="MPC-object" /> The asteroid was named after American astrophysicist [Dirk Terrell](/source/Dirk_Terrell).<ref name="springer" />

Terrell is a member of the [Adeona family](/source/Adeona_family) ({{small|[505](/source/FIN_tbl)}}),<ref name="Ferret" /> a large [family](/source/Asteroid_family) of [carbon](/source/carbon)aceous asteroids in the central main belt, named after [145&nbsp;Adeona](/source/145%26nbsp%3BAdeona).<ref name="Nesvorny-2014" />{{rp|23}}

It orbits the Sun at a distance of 2.2–3.1&nbsp;[AU](/source/Astronomical_unit) once every 4 years and 5 months (1,599 days).
