The 13th Group Army ([Military Unit Cover Designator](/source/Military_Unit_Cover_Designator) (MUCD) 56005)<ref>Blasko 2002, 326. Note that all MUCDs in this article are the old, pre-2000 system.</ref> was established in 1985 after the disbandment of the [50th Army](/source/50th_Army_(People's_Republic_of_China)). During the [Sino-Vietnamese War](/source/Sino-Vietnamese_War), the [Kunming Military Region](/source/Kunming_Military_Region) took responsibility for Chinese operations during the [Battle of Lào Cai](/source/Battle_of_L%C3%A0o_Cai), which involved the 11th and 13th Armies from the Kunming Military Region itself, and the 14th Army from the [Chengdu Military Region](/source/Chengdu_Military_Region), totaling about 125,000 troops.<ref>O'Dowd, p. 61-62.</ref> The three armies was followed by the reserve [149th Division](/source/149th_Division_(People's_Republic_of_China)) of the [50th Army](/source/50th_Army_(People's_Republic_of_China)), as well as many support units.<ref name="Zhang100">Zhang, p. 100.</ref> The invasion comprised three prongs of advances: while the 11th Army was assigned to attack [Phong Thổ](/source/Phong_Th%E1%BB%95) before hooking up to [Sa Pa](/source/Sa_Pa_(town)) and Lào Cai from the west, the 14th Army was ordered to take [Mường Khương](/source/M%C6%B0%E1%BB%9Dng_Kh%C6%B0%C6%A1ng) and move against Lào Cai from the east; the central thrust was undertaken by the 13th Army, targeting Lào Cai itself, as well as the township of Cam Đường to the south.<ref name="ODowd62">O'Dowd, p. 62.</ref>
