It was discovered on 30 March 1981, by American astronomer [Edward Bowell](/source/Edward_Bowell) at Lowell's [Anderson Mesa Station](/source/Anderson_Mesa_Station) near Flagstaff, Arizona.<ref name="MPC-object" /> The stony [S-type asteroid](/source/S-type_asteroid) has a [rotation period](/source/rotation_period) 4.2 hours an possibly an elongated shape.<ref name="lcdb" /> It was named after American astronomer [Marc Buie](/source/Marc_Buie).<ref name="springer" />

== Orbit and classification ==

''Buie'' is a core member of the [Nysa family](/source/Nysa_family) ({{small|[405](/source/FIN_tbl)}}),<ref name="Ferret" /> also known as the Herta family,<ref name="AstDys-object" /> located within the Nysa–Polana complex. It is one of the largest [asteroid families](/source/asteroid_families) of the asteroid belt and named after [44&nbsp;Nysa](/source/44%26nbsp%3BNysa).<ref name="Nesvorny-2014" />

It orbits the Sun in the [inner](/source/Kirkwood_gap) main-belt at a distance of 2.0–2.7&nbsp;[AU](/source/Astronomical_unit) once every 3 years and 8 months (1,351 days; [semi-major axis](/source/semi-major_axis) of 2.39&nbsp;AU). Its orbit has an [eccentricity](/source/orbital_eccentricity) of 0.15 and an [inclination](/source/orbital_inclination) of 3[°](/source/Degree_(angle)) with respect to the [ecliptic](/source/ecliptic).<ref name="jpldata" /> A first [precovery](/source/precovery) was taken at the [Palomar Observatory](/source/Palomar_Observatory) in December 1950, extending the asteroid's [observation arc](/source/observation_arc) by 31 years prior to its discovery.<ref name="MPC-object" />

This [minor planet](/source/minor_planet) was named in honor of American [Marc William Buie](/source/Marc_William_Buie) (born 1958), an astronomer at the discovering [Lowell Observatory](/source/Lowell_Observatory) and a prolific [discoverer of minor planets](/source/discoverer_of_minor_planets) including several [trans-Neptunian object](/source/trans-Neptunian_object)s. In September 2012, a rotational [lightcurve](/source/lightcurve) of ''Buie'' was obtained from photometric observations made at the [Palomar Transient Factory](/source/Palomar_Transient_Factory), California. In the R-band, it gave a [rotation period](/source/rotation_period) of {{val|4.2418|0.0071}} hours with a brightness variation of 0.51 [magnitude](/source/Magnitude_(astronomy)), while in the SG-Band the period was {{val|4.2453|0.}} hours with an amplitude of 0.53 magnitude ({{small|[U=2/2](/source/LCDB_quality_code)}}).<ref name="lcdb" /><ref name="Waszczak-2015" /> A high brightness variation typically indicates a non-spherical shape.

According to the survey carried out by the [NEOWISE](/source/NEOWISE) mission of NASA's [Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer](/source/Wide-field_Infrared_Survey_Explorer), ''Buie'' measures 3.4 kilometers in diameter and its surface has an [albedo](/source/astronomical_albedo) of 0.259,<ref name="WISE" /><ref name="Masiero-2011" /> while the ''Collaborative Asteroid Lightcurve Link'' assumes a standard albedo for stony asteroids of 0.20 and calculates a diameter of 3.92 kilometers using an [absolute magnitude](/source/absolute_magnitude) of 14.4.<ref name="lcdb" />
