'''72 Tauri''' (abbreviated '''72 Tau''') is a possible [binary star](/source/binary_star) in the [zodiac](/source/zodiac) constellation of [Taurus](/source/Taurus_(constellation)). It is faintly visible to the naked eye with an [apparent visual magnitude](/source/apparent_visual_magnitude) of +5.5, although only 0.29° from the brighter [υ Tauri](/source/%CF%85_Tauri). Based upon an annual [parallax shift](/source/stellar_parallax) of {{val|7.9|ul=mas}} seen from Earth, it is around 410 [light year](/source/light_year)s from the [Sun](/source/Sun).

==Properties==
72 Tauri is a [B-type main sequence star](/source/B-type_main_sequence_star) with a [stellar classification](/source/stellar_classification) of B7V.<ref name=mk/> With a mass of {{solar mass|3.48|link=y}} and an estimated age of 38 million years,<ref name=gullikson2016/> it is 2.8 times the [size of the Sun](/source/solar_radius) and 185 times [its luminosity](/source/solar_luminosity).<ref name=dr3/>

Occasionally this star system is given the [Bayer designation](/source/Bayer_designation) ''υ2 Tauri'' with [υ Tauri](/source/%CF%85_Tauri), which is separated from it by 0.29° in the sky.<ref name=hr/> υ Tauri is a foreground star, the two are unrelated,<ref name=dr3u/> and although 72 Tauri lies near the [Hyades](/source/Hyades_(star_cluster)) [open cluster](/source/open_cluster), it is much further away.<ref name=dr3/>

72 Tauri lies near the [ecliptic](/source/ecliptic) and can be [occulted by the moon](/source/lunar_occultation). Observations of an [occultation](/source/occultation) in 1985 showed that it was a binary star with the two components separated by {{val|0.1|ul="}}.<ref name=occultation/> There has been no confirmation of this finding and other sources list the star as single.<ref name=eggleton2008/>
