'''71 Tauri''' is a suspected [triple star](/source/triple_star)<ref name=Eggleton2008/> system in the [zodiac](/source/zodiac) [constellation](/source/constellation) [Taurus](/source/Taurus_(constellation)), located 152 [light year](/source/light_year)s from the Sun.<ref name=GaiaDR3/> It is visible to the [naked eye](/source/naked_eye) as a faint, yellow-white hued star with an [apparent visual magnitude](/source/apparent_visual_magnitude) of +4.48.<ref name="MERMILLIOD"/> The star is moving further away from the Earth with a heliocentric [radial velocity](/source/radial_velocity) of +38 km/s.<ref name=rgcrv/> It is a member of the [Hyades open cluster](/source/Hyades_(star_cluster)).<ref name=Simon2000/>

[[File:V777TauLightCurve.png|thumb|left|250px|A [light curve](/source/light_curve) for V777 Tauri, plotted from ''[TESS](/source/Transiting_Exoplanet_Survey_Satellite)'' data<ref name=MAST/>]]

The primary component is an [F-type main-sequence star](/source/F-type_main-sequence_star) with a [stellar classification](/source/stellar_classification) of F0 V.<ref name=Mullan2000/> In 1979, Stephen Horan discovered that 71 Tauri is a [variable star](/source/variable_star).<ref name="AJ1979"/> It was given its [variable star designation](/source/variable_star_designation), V777 Tauri, in 1981.<ref name="IBVS1981"/> It is a [Delta Scuti variable](/source/Delta_Scuti_variable) with an [amplitude](/source/amplitude) of 0.02 in magnitude and a frequency of 0.16 d−1.<ref name=Samus2017/> This star has about 1.94<ref name=aaa361_614/> times the [mass of the Sun](/source/mass_of_the_Sun) and 3.34<ref name=Mullan2000/> times the [Sun's radius](/source/Sun's_radius). It has a [projected rotational velocity](/source/projected_rotational_velocity) of 192 km s−1, for an estimated rotation period of 14.2 days.<ref name=aaa361_614/> Extreme ultraviolet flares have been observed coming from this star's hot [corona](/source/stellar_corona),<ref name=Mullan2000/> and it is the second brightest [X-ray source](/source/X-ray_astronomy) in the Hyades.<ref name=Simon2000/>
