# 6 Lyncis

**6 Lyncis** is a [star](/source/Star) in the northern [constellation](/source/Constellation) of [Lynx](/source/Lynx_(constellation)),[1] located approximately 179 [light years](/source/Light_year) from Earth.[2] It is visible to the naked eye as a dim, orange-hued star with an [apparent visual magnitude](/source/Apparent_visual_magnitude) of 5.86.[3] This object is moving away from the Earth with a heliocentric [radial velocity](/source/Radial_velocity) of +40 km/s.[3] It has a relatively high [proper motion](/source/Proper_motion), traversing the [celestial sphere](/source/Celestial_sphere) at the rate of 0.341 [arc seconds](/source/Arc_second) per annum.[4] One exoplanet is known to orbit it.[5]

This is an aging [giant star](/source/Giant_star) with a [stellar classification](/source/Stellar_classification) of K0.5 IIIb Fe0.5,[6] which indicates it has a mild overabundance of iron in its [spectrum](/source/Stellar_spectrum). At 2.8 billion years old,[7] it has exhausted the hydrogen at its core, causing it to [evolve](/source/Stellar_evolution) away from the [main sequence](/source/Main_sequence). As a consequence, it has expanded to 5.12 times the [radius of the Sun](/source/Radius_of_the_Sun)[8] although it only has 1.37 times the [Sun's mass](/source/Sun's_mass).[9] The star is radiating 14.2 times the [luminosity of the Sun](/source/Luminosity_of_the_Sun) from its swollen [photosphere](/source/Photosphere) at an [effective temperature](/source/Effective_temperature) of 4,950 K.[7]

## Planetary system

In July 2008, the planet [6 Lyncis b](/source/6_Lyncis_b) was announced by Bun'ei Sato and collaborators from the [Okayama Planet Search Program](/source/Okayama_Planet_Search_Program), along with [14 Andromedae b](/source/14_Andromedae_b) and [81 Ceti b](/source/81_Ceti_b). The planet was found to have [minimum mass](/source/Minimum_mass) of 2.4 Jupiter masses and period of 899 days.[5]
