**6 Hydrae** is a single[8] [star](/source/Star) in the [equatorial](/source/Celestial_equator) [constellation](/source/Constellation) of [Hydra](/source/Hydra_(constellation)), located 373 [light-years](/source/Light-year) away from the [Sun](/source/Sun).[2] It has the [Bayer designation](/source/Bayer_designation) **a Hydrae**; *6 Hydrae* is the [Flamsteed designation](/source/Flamsteed_designation). This object is visible to the naked eye as a faint, orange-hued star with an [apparent visual magnitude](/source/Apparent_visual_magnitude) of 4.98.[1] It is moving closer to the Earth with a heliocentric [radial velocity](/source/Radial_velocity) of −8 km/s.[5] Eggen (1995) listed it as a [proper motion](/source/Proper_motion) candidate for membership in the [IC 2391](/source/IC_2391) [supercluster](/source/Supercluster).[9]

This is an aging [giant star](/source/Giant_star) with a [stellar classification](/source/Stellar_classification) of K3 III,[4] which indicates it has exhausted the [hydrogen](/source/Hydrogen) at its [core](/source/Stellar_core) and [evolved](/source/Stellar_evolution) away from the [main sequence](/source/Main_sequence). As a consequence, it has expanded to 33[2] times the [radius of the Sun](/source/Radius_of_the_Sun). The star is radiating 267[2] times the [luminosity of the Sun](/source/Luminosity_of_the_Sun) from its swollen [photosphere](/source/Photosphere) at an [effective temperature](/source/Effective_temperature) of 4,080 [K](/source/Kelvin).[2]
