The '''Fifth Legislative Assembly of Delhi''' was constituted on 28 December 2013 after the [Delhi Legislative Assembly elections](/source/2013_Delhi_Legislative_Assembly_election) on 4 December 2013.<ref name=" Election Results ">{{cite news|title=Election Results|publisher=[Election Commission of India](/source/Election_Commission_of_India) official website|access-date=9 January 2017|url=http://eci.nic.in/eci_main1/ElectionStatistics.aspx}}</ref>

==Election and Government formation==
Total six national parties, eleven state parties, sixty registered (unrecognised) parties and other independent candidates contested for 70 assembly seats. With 31 seats, [BJP](/source/Bhartiya_Janta_Party) emerged as the single largest party but fell short of the half-way mark required for a simple majority. BJP was closely followed by [AAP](/source/Aam_Aadmi_Party), which won 28 seats. In absence of clear majority, [Legislative Assembly of Delhi](/source/Legislative_Assembly_of_Delhi) was hung. Being the single largest party, [BJP](/source/Bhartiya_Janta_Party) approached the [Lieutenant Governor of Delhi](/source/Lieutenant_Governor_of_Delhi) [Najeeb Jung](/source/Najeeb_Jung) and refused to form a government. Thereafter, [Indian National Congress](/source/Indian_National_Congress), which had won eight seats, offered "unconditional" support to the [AAP](/source/Aam_Aadmi_Party). [AAP](/source/Aam_Aadmi_Party) initially rejected [INC's](/source/Indian_National_Congress) support but later accepted it and formed the government with [Arvind Kejriwal](/source/Arvind_Kejriwal) as the Chief Minister.<ref name=" Election Results "/><ref name=" AAP accepts support ">{{cite news|title=AAP accepts support|publisher=NDTV|access-date=9 January 2017|url=http://www.ndtv.com/india-news/in-seven-languages-aap-explains-why-it-accepted-congress-support-545549}}</ref>
