According to an [MIT](/source/Massachusetts_Institute_of_Technology) [Project Whirwind](/source/Whirlwind_I) memorandum, the tube was developed c.1953 for [IBM](/source/IBM) by [GE](/source/GE), primarily for use in the [IBM 701](/source/IBM_701) computer, and was designated as a general-purpose triode tube.<ref>{{cite web |last1=Frost |first1=H.
