The **52 series** (52系) [EMUs](/source/Electric_multiple_unit) were manufactured in 1936-1937 in 3 batches and operated by [Japanese Government Railways](/source/Japanese_Government_Railways) (JGR, later [JNR](/source/Japanese_National_Railways)) for use on the [Hanwa Line](/source/Hanwa_Line), and later used on the [San'yō Main Line](/source/San'y%C5%8D_Main_Line), [JR Kobe Line](/source/JR_Kobe_Line), [JR Kyoto Line](/source/JR_Kyoto_Line) in the [Kansai region](/source/Kansai_region) and the [Iida Line](/source/Iida_Line) in [Nagano Prefecture](/source/Nagano_Prefecture), [Japan](/source/Japan). The trains were developed from the [42 series](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=42_series&action=edit&redlink=1) EMUs.

The 52 series EMUs were retired between 1976 and 1983.
