# 497 Iva

**497 Iva** is a [main-belt asteroid](/source/Asteroid_belt) orbiting the [Sun](/source/Sun), not to be confused with [1627 Ivar](/source/1627_Ivar). It was discovered by American astronomer [R. S. Dugan](/source/Raymond_Smith_Dugan) on 4 November 1902, and was named for Iva Shores, the young daughter of the family where he was staying in Heidelberg.[2] This object is orbiting at a distance of 2.85 AU with a [period](/source/Orbital_period) of 1,758.8 days and an [eccentricity](/source/Orbital_eccentricity) of 0.3. The [orbital plane](/source/Orbital_plane) is inclined at an angle of 4.8° to the [plane of the ecliptic](/source/Plane_of_the_ecliptic).[3]

This asteroid is classified as an [M-type asteroid](/source/M-type_asteroid) and is considered [anhydrous](/source/Anhydrous)[4] but [oxidized](/source/Oxidized).[5] Further analysis of the spectra suggests the "presence of either an [olivine](/source/Olivine) or high-Ca [pyroxene](/source/Pyroxene) phase in addition to [orthopyroxene](/source/Orthopyroxene) ± Type B [clinopyroxene](/source/Clinopyroxene)".[6] Analysis of [light curves](/source/Light_curve) based on [photometric](/source/Photometry_(astronomy)) data show a [rotation period](/source/Rotation_period) of 4.621 ± 0.001 hours with a brightness variation of 0.34 ± 0.02 in [magnitude](/source/Apparent_magnitude).[7]
