Year **485 BC** was a year of the [pre-Julian Roman calendar](/source/Roman_calendar). At the time, it was known as the **Year of the Consulship of Cornelius and Vibulanus** (or, less frequently, **year 269 *[Ab urbe condita](/source/Ab_urbe_condita)***). The denomination 485 BC for this year has been used since the early medieval period, when the [Anno Domini](/source/Anno_Domini) [calendar era](/source/Calendar_era) became the prevalent method in Europe for naming years.

## Events

### By place

#### Persian Empire

- [Xerxes I](/source/Xerxes_I_of_Persia) is just beginning his reign after the death of his father [Darius the Great](/source/Darius_the_Great) in 486 BC.[1] During this time the Persian empire extends as far west as [Macedonia](/source/Macedon) and [Libya](/source/Libya) and as far east as the [Hyphasis](/source/Beas_River) (Beas) River; it stretches to the [Caucasus Mountains](/source/Caucasus_Mountains) and the [Aral Sea](/source/Aral_Sea) in the north and to the [Persian Gulf](/source/Persian_Gulf) and the [Arabian Desert](/source/Arabian_Desert) in the south.

#### Sicily

- [Gelo](/source/Gelo), the tyrant of [Gela](/source/Gela), takes advantage of an appeal by the descendants of the first colonist of [Syracuse](/source/Syracuse%2C_Sicily), the Gamoroi, who had held power until they were expelled by the Killichiroi, the lower class of the city. He makes himself master of that city, leaving his brother [Hieron](/source/Hiero_I_of_Syracuse) to control Gela.

#### Roman Republic

- Three times [Roman consul](/source/Roman_consul) [Spurius Cassius Vecellinus](/source/Spurius_Cassius_Vecellinus) is tried, condemned and executed for [high treason](/source/Perduellio).

- The consul [Quintus Fabius Vibulanus](/source/Quintus_Fabius_Vibulanus_(consul_485_BC)) defeated the [Volsci](/source/Roman-Volscian_wars#Ongoing_hostilities_from_487_BC) and [Aequi](/source/Aequi) in battle, but incurred the anger of the plebs by lodging the spoils of victory with the *[publicum](/source/Aerarium#Publicum)*.

## Births

- [Herodotus](/source/Herodotus), Greek historian, is estimated to be born this year.[2]

- Some sources place the birth of [Euripides](/source/Euripides) in this year, though the more traditional date is 480.[3]

## Deaths

- [Spurius Cassius Vecellinus](/source/Spurius_Cassius_Vecellinus), three times [Roman consul](/source/Roman_consul).
