Year **447** (**[CDXLVII](/source/Roman_numerals)**) was a [common year starting on Wednesday](/source/Common_year_starting_on_Wednesday) of the [Julian calendar](/source/Julian_calendar). At the time, it was known in the Roman Empire as the **Year of the Consulship of Calepius and [Ardabur](/source/Ardabur_(consul_447))** (or, less frequently, **year 1200 *[Ab urbe condita](/source/Ab_urbe_condita)***). The denomination 447 for this year has been used since the early medieval period, when the [Anno Domini](/source/Anno_Domini) [calendar era](/source/Calendar_era) became the prevalent method in Europe for naming years.

- [November 6](/source/November_6) – The [Walls of Constantinople](/source/Walls_of_Constantinople) are severely damaged by an earthquake, which destroys large parts of the structure, including 57 [towers](/source/Tower). The population is threatened by a plague. Emperor [Theodosius II](/source/Theodosius_II) orders [Constantine](/source/Constantine_(consul_457)), [praetorian prefect of the East](/source/Praetorian_prefecture_of_the_East), to supervise the repairs. He employs the city's *demoi* ("[Circus](/source/Hippodrome_of_Constantinople) factions") in the work, and rebuilds the walls within 60 days.

- The [Huns](/source/Huns), led by [Attila](/source/Attila), cross the [Danube](/source/Danube), and invade the [Balkans](/source/Balkans) as far as [Thermopylae](/source/Thermopylae) (Greece).
