'''39 Tauri''' is a [binary star](/source/binary_star) in the northern [constellation](/source/constellation) of [Taurus](/source/Taurus_(constellation)). It has an [apparent visual magnitude](/source/apparent_visual_magnitude) of 5.90, so, according to the [Bortle scale](/source/Bortle_scale), it is faintly visible from suburban skies at night. Measurements made with the [Hipparcos](/source/Hipparcos) spacecraft show an annual [parallax](/source/parallax) shift of 0.0594728″, which is equivalent to a distance of around 55&nbsp;[light year](/source/light_year)s from the Sun.

39 Tauri has been resolved into a pair of stars using [speckle interferometry](/source/speckle_interferometry).<ref name=hartkopf2009/>  However, many observations have failed to resolve the secondary star.<ref name="Roberts2005"/>

A [stellar classification](/source/stellar_classification) of G5&nbsp;V<ref name="Shenavrin2011"/> matches that of a [G-type main sequence star](/source/G-type_main_sequence_star); the type of the secondary component is unknown. Stellar models indicate the primary component is similar in physical properties to the Sun, with 110% of the Sun's mass, 96% of the radius, and shining with almost the same luminosity.<ref name="Ghezzi2010"/> The overall [metallicity](/source/metallicity) of the star—the abundance of elements other than hydrogen and helium—is similar to the Sun.<ref name="Casagrande2011"/> At a relatively youthful estimated age of one billion years,<ref name="Ghezzi2010"/> it is rotating with a period of 9.12<ref name="LópezSantiago2010"/> days. Based upon Hipparcos data, it displays a mild [variability](/source/Variable_star) with an [amplitude](/source/amplitude) of 0.06&nbsp;[magnitude](/source/Magnitude_(astronomy)).<ref name="Adelman2000"/>

The [space velocity](/source/Space_velocity_(astronomy)) components of 39 Tauri are: –25.0(U), –14.0(V), –6.0(W). The surface activity and kinematic properties of this star are consistent with membership in the [IC 2391](/source/IC_2391) [moving group](/source/moving_group).<ref name="Murgas2013"/> It is following an orbit through the [Milky Way](/source/Milky_Way) galaxy that has an [eccentricity](/source/Orbital_eccentricity) of 0.06 carrying it as close as {{Convert|7.34|kpc|kly|abbr=on|disp=flip}} to the [Galactic Center](/source/Galactic_Center), and as far away as {{Convert|8.21|kpc|kly|abbr=on|disp=flip}}. The [orbital inclination](/source/orbital_inclination) will carry the star no further than {{Convert|10|pc|ly|abbr=on|disp=flip}} away from the [galactic plane](/source/galactic_plane).<ref name="Casagrande2011"/>
