It was discovered by [Auguste Charlois](/source/Auguste_Charlois) on March 10 1893 in [Nice](/source/Nice). It was named by the daughter of [Felix Klein](/source/Felix_Klein) at a meeting of the [Astronomische Gesellschaft](/source/Astronomische_Gesellschaft) in 1902 held at the [Georg August University of Göttingen](/source/Georg_August_University_of_G%C3%B6ttingen), where Klein was a professor. It was named after the University's founder King [George II of Great Britain](/source/George_II_of_Great_Britain), [Elector of Hanover](/source/Elector_of_Hanover).<ref>Lutz D.
