**27th Street station** is a [commuter rail](/source/Commuter_rail) station in the [Douglas](/source/Douglas%2C_Chicago) neighborhood of [Chicago](/source/Chicago) that serves the [Metra Electric Line](/source/Metra_Electric_Line) north to [Millennium Station](/source/Millennium_Station) and south to [University Park](/source/University_Park%2C_Illinois), [Blue Island](/source/Blue_Island%2C_Illinois), and [South Chicago](/source/South_Chicago%2C_Chicago). As of 2018, 27th Street is Metra's least-used station, with an average of 12 weekday boardings.[2] 27th Street is a [flag stop](/source/Flag_stop); trains will not stop unless a passenger is waiting on the platform or a passenger notifies a conductor.

The station was originally built by the [Illinois Central Railroad](/source/Illinois_Central_Railroad) (ICRR). It directly served [Michael Reese Hospital](/source/Michael_Reese_Hospital) until the hospital closed in 2008. It was the site of Chicago's worst rail disaster, the [1972 Chicago commuter rail crash](/source/1972_Chicago_commuter_rail_crash).
