The **2019 Rio Open** was a professional men's [tennis](/source/Tennis) tournament played on outdoor [clay courts](/source/Clay_court). It was the sixth edition of the [Rio Open](/source/Rio_Open), and formed part of the [ATP Tour 500](/source/ATP_Tour_500) series of the [2019 ATP Tour](/source/2019_ATP_Tour). It took place in [Rio de Janeiro](/source/Rio_de_Janeiro), Brazil between February 18 and 24, 2019.

There was a plan to move the tournament from the clay court surface in [Jockey Club Brasileiro](/source/Jockey_Club_Brasileiro) to the outdoor [hard courts](/source/Hard_courts) at the [Olympic Tennis Centre](/source/Olympic_Tennis_Centre_(Rio_de_Janeiro)), which hosted the [tennis events](/source/Tennis_at_the_2016_Summer_Olympics) of the [2016 Summer Olympics](/source/2016_Summer_Olympics) situated in [Barra Olympic Park](/source/Barra_Olympic_Park).[1] The intention was to attract more world class players in the tournament such as [Novak Djokovič](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Novak_Djokovi%C4%8D&action=edit&redlink=1), [Roger Federer](/source/Roger_Federer), and [Andy Murray](/source/Andy_Murray) who consistently declined to play the event. [Juan Martín del Potro](/source/Juan_Mart%C3%ADn_del_Potro) once said to the Rio Open director Luiz Carvalho that he would play Rio Open when the surface changes.[2]
