The '''2019 Java blackout''' was a [power outage](/source/power_outage) that occurred across much of [Java](/source/Java) on August 4, 2019, 11:50 ([UTC+7](/source/UTC%2B7)) to August 5, 2019, at 22:00 ([UTC+7](/source/UTC%2B7)) (depending on area).

==Areas affected==

Areas affected by power cuts include the [Greater Jakarta](/source/Greater_Jakarta) area including [Jakarta](/source/Jakarta), [Banten](/source/Banten), [West Java](/source/West_Java), parts of [Special Region of Yogyakarta](/source/Special_Region_of_Yogyakarta), [Central Java](/source/Central_Java) and [East Java](/source/East_Java).<ref>{{Cite web |last=Hamdani |first=Trio |date=4 August 2019 |title=Laporan PLN: Listrik Padam Hingga ke Jateng |url=https://finance.detik.com/energi/d-4651586/laporan-pln-listrik-padam-hingga-ke-jateng |access-date=2023-04-03 |website=detikfinance |language=id-ID}}</ref> In West Java, areas affected by the power cuts included Bandung, Bekasi, Cianjur, Cimahi, Cirebon, Garut, Karawang, Purwakarta, Majalaya, Sumedang, Tasikmalaya, Depok, Gunung Putri, Sukabumi, and Bogor. In Banten, the area affected was Cilegon.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Iqbal |first=Muhammad |date=4 August 2019 |title=Cilegon Juga Terdampak Pemadaman Listrik |url=https://news.detik.com/berita/d-4651570/cilegon-juga-terdampak-pemadaman-listrik |access-date=2023-04-03 |website=detiknews |language=id-ID}}</ref>

==Cause==
The cause of the blackout was confused in [Perusahaan Listrik Negara](/source/Perusahaan_Listrik_Negara) (The State Electricity Company)'s initial announcements. At first, PLN cited disruptions in gas turbines 1 to 6 at [the Suralaya Power Plant](/source/Suralaya_Power_Station) and some other disruptions at the Cilegon Power Plant.<ref name=cnn1>{{cite news|url=https://m.cnnindonesia.com/nasional/20190804131436-20-418182/pln-ungkap-penyebab-listrik-padam-di-jakarta-jabar-banten|title=PLN Ungkap Penyebab Listrik Padam di Jakarta, Jabar, Banten|website=CNN Indonesia|accessdate=4 August 2019}}</ref> PLN then corrected the reason by citing a disturbance on the transmission side of Ungaran and Pemalang 500 kV which resulted in energy transfers from east to west failing.<ref name=cnn2>{{cite news|url=https://m.cnnindonesia.com/nasional/20190804133829-20-418196/pln-ralat-penyebab-listrik-padam-di-jakarta-dan-sekitarnya|title=PLN Ralat Penyebab Listrik Padam di Jakarta dan Sekitarnya|website=CNN Indonesia|date=4 August 2019|accessdate=4 August 2019}}</ref> PLN expressed its apology regarding this.<ref>{{cite news|last=Makdori|first=Yopi|url=https://liputan6.com/news/read/4029337/pln-mati-lampu-kami-minta-maaf|title=PLN: Mati Lampu, Kami Minta Maaf|website=Liputan 6|date=4 August 2019|accessdate=4 August 2019}}</ref>

Ultimately, the limited number of east–west transmission lines on the island caused the blackout. After a lightning strike disabled one transmission line, the only other became overloaded and automatically removed itself from service. The network west of the break had insufficient generation, and could not shed enough load to recover. The network east had excess generation, and survived without blacking out.<ref>{{cite conference|doi=10.1109/ICT-PEP50916.2020.9249797|year=2020|conference=Int'l. The blackout began at 11:50 local time, when [Jakarta MRT](/source/Jakarta_MRT) authorities began to detect the loss of electrical supply,<ref>{{Cite web |last=Ismail |first=Taufik |date=4 August 2019 |title=Listrik Padam di Jabodetabek, MRT Tutup Layanan untuk Sementara |url=https://www.tribunnews.com/metropolitan/2019/08/04/listrik-padam-di-jabodetabek-mrt-tutup-layanan-untuk-sementara |access-date=2019-08-04 |website=Tribunnews.com |language=id}}</ref> rendering its trains inoperable and requiring people stuck inside to evacuate. [Jakarta LRT](/source/Jakarta_LRT) and [KRL Commuterline](/source/KRL_Commuterline) also suffered from the blackout making [TransJakarta](/source/TransJakarta) the only mass transit transportation remaining in operation at the time of the blackout. The governor of Jakarta, [Anies Baswedan](/source/Anies_Baswedan) made [TransJakarta](/source/TransJakarta) and [Jakarta MRT](/source/Jakarta_MRT) services free of charge until the end of the day.

In the telecommunications sector, the telephone network was also disrupted.<ref>{{cite news|last=Puspita|first=Shelly|editor-last=Ika|editor-first=Aprillia|url=https://megapolitan.kompas.com/read/2019/08/04/12515891/mati-listrik-se-jabodetabek-jaringan-telepon-terganggu?page=all|title=Mati Listrik se-Jabodetabek, Jaringan Telepon Terganggu|website=Kompas|date=4 August 2019|accessdate=4 August 2019}}</ref> Disrupted networks included [Telkomsel](/source/Telkomsel),<ref>{{Cite web |last=Lidyana |first=Vadhia |date=4 August 2019 |title=Telkomsel Laporkan Gangguan Jaringan Imbas Mati Listrik Massal |url=https://inet.detik.com/telecommunication/d-4651740/telkomsel-laporkan-gangguan-jaringan-imbas-mati-listrik-massal |access-date=2023-04-03 |website=detikinet |language=id}}</ref> [Indosat](/source/Indosat), [XL Axiata](/source/XL_Axiata), [3](/source/3_(telecommunications)), and [Smartfren](/source/Smartfren).<ref>{{Cite web |last=Rachmatunnisa |date=4 August 2019 |title=Mati Listrik, Komunikasi Ponsel Ikut Lumpuh |url=https://inet.detik.com/telecommunication/d-4651696/mati-listrik-komunikasi-ponsel-ikut-lumpuh |access-date=2023-04-03 |website=detikinet |language=id}}</ref> [Gojek](/source/Go-Jek) and [Grab](/source/Grab_(company)) had problems due to the lack of internet services.

Around 21.3 million people were affected by the power outage. The blackout lasted around 9 hours where at 21:00 local time, power to most of the affected areas has been restored. Power to some rural and residential areas in Jakarta had not been restored past midnight. Some areas initially had electricity restored by midnight or later, only to have it cut off again.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Wulandari |first=Siti Nurjannah |date=5 August 2019 |editor-last=Widyastuti |editor-first=Pravitri Retno |title=Listrik Mati Lagi di Sebagian Jabodetabek Senin Pagi, Kapan Menyala?
