International weightlifting competition

The **2017 World Weightlifting Championships** were held in [Anaheim](/source/Anaheim%2C_California), [California](/source/California%2C_United_States), [United States](/source/United_States) from 28 November to 5 December 2017.[1][2]

## Doping bans

Nine countries were banned from competing at the World Championships due to their history of doping at previous [Olympic Games](/source/Olympic_Games), under [International Weightlifting Federation](/source/International_Weightlifting_Federation) rules stating that any country that had three positive tests uncovered by the [International Olympic Committee](/source/International_Olympic_Committee) during re-testing of stored urine samples for banned substances from the [2008](/source/2008_Summer_Olympics) and [2012](/source/2012_Summer_Olympics) Olympics would be banned.

The banned countries were: [Russia](/source/Russia), [China](/source/China), [Kazakhstan](/source/Kazakhstan), [Armenia](/source/Armenia), [Turkey](/source/Turkey), [Moldova](/source/Moldova), [Ukraine](/source/Ukraine), [Belarus](/source/Belarus) and [Azerbaijan](/source/Azerbaijan).[3]

## Boycott

[North Korea](/source/North_Korea) and [Venezuela](/source/Venezuela) boycotted the World Championships due to the crises in relations between the United States and these countries.[4] The World Championships organizing committee had said it did not foresee any visa problems for the North Korean team.[5]
