It is the third tier of senior inter-county championship hurling.[1] [Mayo](/source/Mayo_GAA), the [2016 champions](/source/2016_Nicky_Rackard_Cup), were promoted to the [2017 Christy Ring Cup](/source/2017_Christy_Ring_Cup) after defeating [Derry](/source/Derry_GAA) in the promotion/relegation playoff 1–21 to 1–14. ## Format The 2017 [Nicky Rackard Cup](/source/Nicky_Rackard_Cup) is played in a [double-elimination](/source/Double-elimination_tournament) format. For clarity, the match-ups are explained in each round below. The seven teams competing in 2017 were [Armagh](/source/Armagh_GAA), [Derry](/source/Derry_GAA), [Donegal](/source/Donegal_GAA), [Longford](/source/Longford_GAA), [Louth](/source/Louth_GAA), [Monaghan](/source/Monaghan_GAA), and [Tyrone](/source/Tyrone_GAA).
