The **2013 Saudi Super Cup** was the inaugural edition of the [Saudi Super Cup](/source/Saudi_Super_Cup), an annual Saudi [football](/source/Association_football) match played between the winners of the previous season's [Saudi Pro League](/source/Saudi_Pro_League) and the [King Cup of Champions](/source/King's_Cup_(Saudi_Arabia)).

The match was contested by [Al-Fateh](/source/Al_Fateh_SC), winners of the [2012–13 Saudi Pro League](/source/2012%E2%80%9313_Saudi_Pro_League), and [Al-Ittihad](/source/Al-Ittihad_Club_(Jeddah)), winners of the [2013 King Cup of Champions](/source/2013_King_Cup_of_Champions). It was held on 17 August 2013 at the [King Abdulaziz Stadium](/source/King_Abdulaziz_Sports_City_Stadium) in [Mecca](/source/Mecca), [Saudi Arabia](/source/Saudi_Arabia).[3]

[Al-Fateh](/source/Al_Fateh_SC) won the match 3–2 after [extra time](/source/Overtime_(sports)#Association_football), becoming the inaugural champions of the Saudi Super Cup.[4]

## Venue

The [King Abdulaziz Stadium](/source/King_Abdulaziz_Sports_City_Stadium) was announced as the host of the final venue on 12 July 2013.[5] This was the second domestic final to be held in the stadium.

The King Abdulaziz Stadium was opened in 1986.[6] The stadium was used as a venue for the [2005 Islamic Solidarity Games](/source/Football_at_the_2005_Islamic_Solidarity_Games) and hosted the final.[7] It also hosted the [2011 Saudi Crown Prince Cup final](/source/2011_Saudi_Crown_Prince_Cup_final).[8] Its current capacity is 33,000[9] and it is used by [Al-Wehda](/source/Al_Wehda_FC) as a home stadium.

## Background

Main articles: [2012–13 Saudi Pro League](/source/2012%E2%80%9313_Saudi_Pro_League) and [2013 King Cup of Champions](/source/2013_King_Cup_of_Champions)

In 2012, the [Saudi Arabian Football Federation](/source/Saudi_Arabian_Football_Federation) officially decided to launch the Saudi Super Cup following the conclusion of the 2011–12 season. The planned inaugural match was scheduled to be held between the [2011–12 Saudi Pro League](/source/2011%E2%80%9312_Saudi_Pro_League) champions, [Al-Shabab](/source/Al_Shabab_Club), and the [2012 King Cup of Champions](/source/2012_King_Cup_of_Champions) winners, Al-Ahli.[10] However, the 2012 Super Cup was canceled due to scheduling issues, as no appropriate date for the match could be found.[11] As a result, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation postponed the tournament to 2013.

[Al-Fateh](/source/Al_Fateh_SC) qualified for the 2013 Saudi Super Cup by winning the [2012–13 Saudi Pro League](/source/2012%E2%80%9313_Saudi_Pro_League), securing the title with two matches to spare after a 1–0 home win against [Al-Ahli](/source/Al-Ahli_Saudi_FC).[12] [Al-Ittihad](/source/Al-Ittihad_Club_(Jeddah)) qualified by winning their eighth [King Cup](/source/King's_Cup_(Saudi_Arabia)) title, defeating [Al-Shabab](/source/Al_Shabab_Club) 4–2 in the final.[13]

This match marked the 11th meeting between Al-Fateh and Al-Ittihad in all competitions. Prior to this game, both teams had won four matches each, with two encounters ending in draws.[14]
