# 2012: Doomsday

***2012: Doomsday*** is a 2008 [direct-to-video](/source/Direct-to-video) [science fiction](/source/Science_fiction_film) [action film](/source/Action_film) written and directed by [Nick Everhart](/source/Nick_Everhart). The film is about scientists who go to Mexico looking for an ancient temple to save humanity on [December 21, 2012](/source/December_21,_2012). It stars [Cliff DeYoung](/source/Cliff_DeYoung), [Dale Midkiff](/source/Dale_Midkiff), and [Ami Dolenz](/source/Ami_Dolenz).

## Premise

Four strangers use their faith to go to Mexico before the [Mayan calendar](/source/Mayan_calendar) ends in 2012.

The film is set on December 21, 2012, and follows the [2012 phenomenon](/source/2012_phenomenon).[1] [The Asylum](/source/The_Asylum) said the film was part of their new series of [faith-based](/source/Faith-based_film) [end of the world](/source/Apocalyptic_and_post-apocalyptic_fiction) films.[2]

## Reception

[Collider](/source/Collider_(website)) called it a "thermonuclear [dumpster fire](/source/Dumpster_fire)," claiming it makes [Roland Emmerich's film](/source/2012_(film)) look like *[Citizen Kane](/source/Citizen_Kane)*.[4] Richard Drake at [Arkansas Times](/source/Arkansas_Times) wrote a negative review saying they will "find someone who really needs their weekend ruined, and pass this movie along to them."[5]

Film critic Christopher Armstead said it has "glorious and unexpected humor" but that pacing may leave those without patience unable to continue.[6] OutNow scored it 1 out of 6, criticizing the effects and claiming "it is a mess, even for fans of trash cinema."[7]

The film ranks #1 on Collider's 10 Worst Disaster Movies of All Time.[4]

## Sequel

Although the film was released before the Emmerich title in 2009, [The Asylum](/source/The_Asylum) announced that a sequel called *2012: Part 2* would be coming, since Dolenz's character survived.[8]
