International football competition

The **2009 Peace Cup Andalucia** was an invitational friendly [football](/source/Association_football) tournament. It was the fourth edition of [Peace Cup](/source/Peace_Cup) and was held in Spain from 24 July to 2 August in the cities of [Madrid](/source/Madrid), [Seville](/source/Seville), [Málaga](/source/M%C3%A1laga), [Jerez](/source/Jerez_de_la_Frontera) and [Huelva](/source/Huelva). It was the first time that the tournament has been hosted by a nation other than South Korea. The winners of the tournament were [Aston Villa](/source/Aston_Villa_F.C.), who defeated [Juventus](/source/Juventus_FC) in the final.[1] They succeeded [Lyon](/source/Olympique_Lyonnais), who were the previous holders of the tournament through winning the [2007 edition](/source/2007_Peace_Cup).[2] It was one of seven 2009 pre-season friendly tournaments, the others being the [Emirates Cup](/source/Emirates_Cup), the [Barclays Asia Trophy](/source/Barclays_Asia_Trophy), the [World Football Challenge](/source/World_Football_Challenge), the [Wembley Cup](/source/Wembley_Cup), the [Amsterdam Tournament](/source/Amsterdam_Tournament) and the [Audi Cup](/source/Audi_Cup).[3]

Several players scored their first goals for new clubs in the 2009 Peace Cup competition, though these goals do not impact their regular season statistics. These players included [Cristiano Ronaldo](/source/Cristiano_Ronaldo) scoring his first goal for Real Madrid,[4] [Diego](/source/Diego_(footballer%2C_born_1985)) scored his first goal for Juventus in the Peace Cup, and [Marc Albrighton](/source/Marc_Albrighton) scored his first goal for Aston Villa in the Peace Cup. Aston Villa's [Stiliyan Petrov](/source/Stiliyan_Petrov) suffered a dislocated shoulder in the competition's group stages that forced him to miss significant time with injury.[5]

## Teams

The following 12 teams confirmed to play in the tournament.[6]

Team League Málaga 2009–10 La Liga Real Madrid Sevilla Al-Ittihad 2009–10 Saudi Professional League Aston Villa 2009–10 Premier League Atlante 2009–10 Primera División de México Beşiktaş 2009–10 Süper Lig Juventus 2009–10 Serie A LDU Quito 2009 Campeonato Ecuatoriano de Fútbol Serie A Lyon 2009–10 Ligue 1 Porto 2009–10 Primeira Liga Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma 2009 K League

## Venues

After the previous three tournaments were held in South Korea, the Peace Cup Committee decided that the tournament would be hosted by another country. In 2007, the Peace Cup organizers were connected with Sports Ministry of [Andalucia](/source/Andalucia) and [Andalucia Football Federation](/source/Andalucia_Football_Federation), after the discussion with the Autonomous Community of Andalucia, they suggested the cities of [Seville](/source/Seville), [Málaga](/source/M%C3%A1laga), [Huelva](/source/Huelva) and [Jerez](/source/Jerez) to host the 2009 Peace Cup.[7]

On 19 December 2007, it was announced in a press conference in [Seville](/source/Seville) that the number of teams would be increased to 12. It was also confirmed that [Real Madrid](/source/Real_Madrid_C.F.) and [Sevilla](/source/Sevilla_FC) would be playing in the tournament.[8] The Peace Cup committee continued to negotiate with other "big" clubs, by 13 April 2009, eight more participating clubs such as [Juventus](/source/Juventus_FC), [Málaga](/source/M%C3%A1laga_CF), [Lyon](/source/Olympique_Lyonnais), [Aston Villa](/source/Aston_Villa_F.C.), [Celtic](/source/Celtic_F.C.), [Porto](/source/FC_Porto), [Fenerbahçe](/source/Fenerbah%C3%A7e_S.K._(football)) and [LDU Quito](/source/LDU_Quito), were announced.[9] Celtic and Fenerbahçe, however, were forced to pull out due to conflicts with [UEFA Champions League](/source/UEFA_Champions_League) qualifying ties; they were replaced by [Atlante](/source/Atlante_F.C.) and [Beşiktaş](/source/Be%C5%9Fikta%C5%9F_J.K.),[10][11] respectively.

The official venue for the tournament was [Andalucia](/source/Andalucia), however some matches were played in [Madrid](/source/Madrid).[12]
