The **2006 [California State Controller](/source/California_State_Controller) election** occurred on November 7, 2006. The [primary elections](/source/Primary_elections) took place on June 6, 2006. [Board of Equalization](/source/State_Board_of_Equalization_(California)) Chair [John Chiang](/source/John_Chiang_(California_politician)), the [Democratic](/source/California_Democratic_Party) nominee, defeated the [Republican](/source/California_Republican_Party) nominee, [Assemblyman](/source/California_State_Assembly) [Tony Strickland](/source/Tony_Strickland), for the office previously held by Democrat [Steve Westly](/source/Steve_Westly), who [ran for governor](/source/California_gubernatorial_election,_2006).
