The **2003 PGA Championship** was the 85th [PGA Championship](/source/PGA_Championship), held from August 14–17 at the East Course of [Oak Hill Country Club](/source/Oak_Hill_Country_Club) near [Rochester, New York](/source/Rochester%2C_New_York). [Shaun Micheel](/source/Shaun_Micheel) won his only [major](/source/Men's_major_golf_championships) title, two strokes ahead of runner-up [Chad Campbell](/source/Chad_Campbell).[2][3] It was also the sole career win for Micheel on the [PGA Tour](/source/PGA_Tour), who was making his 164th PGA Tour start and was ranked 169th in the world at the start of the week.

This was the fifth major at the East Course, which previously hosted the PGA Championship in [1980](/source/1980_PGA_Championship), and the [U.S. Open](/source/U.S._Open_(golf)) in [1956](/source/1956_U.S._Open_(golf)), [1968](/source/1968_U.S._Open_(golf)), and [1989](/source/1989_U.S._Open_(golf)). It also hosted the [Ryder Cup](/source/Ryder_Cup) in [1995](/source/1995_Ryder_Cup); the PGA Championship returned in [2013](/source/2013_PGA_Championship) and [2023](/source/2023_PGA_Championship).

The first round was played during the [Northeast blackout of 2003](/source/Northeast_blackout_of_2003). Despite this, and a state of emergency in [Monroe County](/source/Monroe_County%2C_New_York), there was no interruption to play.[4]
