The **1995 PGA Championship** was the 77th [PGA Championship](/source/PGA_Championship), held August 10–13 at [Riviera Country Club](/source/Riviera_Country_Club) in [Los Angeles](/source/Los_Angeles), [California](/source/California). [Steve Elkington](/source/Steve_Elkington) shot a final round 64 (−7) and won his only [major championship](/source/Men's_major_golf_championships) in a sudden-death playoff. Elkington sank a 20-foot (6 m) birdie putt on the first playoff hole (par 4, 18th) to defeat [Colin Montgomerie](/source/Colin_Montgomerie).[2][3] [Ernie Els](/source/Ernie_Els), the third round leader, shot 72 (+1) and finished two strokes back, in a tie for third with Jeff Maggert. His 197 after 54 holes was the lowest-ever for a major championship.[4]

A new 72-hole scoring record for the PGA Championship was set at 267, the second straight year for a new low. [Bobby Nichols](/source/Bobby_Nichols)' 271 in [1964](/source/1964_PGA_Championship) stood for thirty years, until [Nick Price](/source/Nick_Price) had 269 in [1994](/source/1994_PGA_Championship).[5] The record was lowered by two strokes in [2001](/source/2001_PGA_Championship).

Elkington became the fourth [Australian](/source/Australia)-born player to win the PGA Championship, preceded by [Jim Ferrier](/source/Jim_Ferrier) in [1947](/source/1947_PGA_Championship), [David Graham](/source/David_Graham_(golfer)) in [1979](/source/1979_PGA_Championship), and [Wayne Grady](/source/Wayne_Grady) in [1990](/source/1990_PGA_Championship). The next was [Jason Day](/source/Jason_Day) in [2015](/source/2015_PGA_Championship).

[Brad Faxon](/source/Brad_Faxon) shot a final round 63 to climb to fifth place and earned a spot on the [Ryder Cup](/source/1995_Ryder_Cup) team. His record was 1–2–0 in his first [Ryder Cup](/source/Ryder_Cup), as the U.S. team narrowly lost at home.

This was the third major championship at Riviera, which previously hosted the [U.S. Open](/source/U.S._Open_(golf)) in [1948](/source/1948_U.S._Open_(golf)) and the PGA Championship in [1983](/source/1983_PGA_Championship).[6] It was the fourth PGA Championship in California ([1929](/source/1929_PGA_Championship), [1977](/source/1977_PGA_Championship), 1983), and the last until [2020](/source/2020_PGA_Championship).
