The **1994 Quebec general election** was held on September 12, 1994, to elect members to the [National Assembly of Quebec](/source/National_Assembly_of_Quebec) in the [province](/source/Provinces_and_territories_of_Canada) of [Quebec](/source/Quebec), [Canada](/source/Canada). The [Parti Québécois](/source/Parti_Qu%C3%A9b%C3%A9cois), led by hard soverignist [Jacques Parizeau](/source/Jacques_Parizeau), defeated the incumbent [Quebec Liberal Party](/source/Quebec_Liberal_Party), led by Premier [Daniel Johnson Jr.](/source/Daniel_Johnson_Jr.)

Johnson had succeeded [Robert Bourassa](/source/Robert_Bourassa) as Liberal leader and Premier. Both his father, [Daniel Sr.](/source/Daniel_Johnson%2C_Sr.), and brother, [Pierre-Marc](/source/Pierre-Marc_Johnson), had previously served as premiers of Quebec as leaders of different parties.

The election set the stage for the [1995 Quebec referendum](/source/1995_Quebec_referendum) on independence for Quebec from Canada. The referendum would see the PQ government's proposals for [sovereignty](/source/Quebec_sovereignty_movement) very narrowly defeated.

[Mario Dumont](/source/Mario_Dumont), a former president of the Liberal party's youth wing, and then leader of the newly formed [Action démocratique du Québec](/source/Action_d%C3%A9mocratique_du_Qu%C3%A9bec), won his own seat, but no other members of his party were elected.

In [Saint-Jean](/source/Saint-Jean_(provincial_electoral_district)), there was a tie between incumbent Liberal candidate [Michel Charbonneau](/source/Michel_Charbonneau) and PQ candidate [Roger Paquin](/source/Roger_Paquin). A new election was held on October 24 and was won by Paquin by a margin of 532 votes.[1]
