Tennis tournament

1991 Davis Cup Details Duration 1 February – 1 December 1991 Edition 80th Teams 87 Champion Winning nation France ← 1990 1992 →

The **1991 Davis Cup** (also known as the **1991 Davis Cup by [NEC](/source/NEC)** for sponsorship purposes) was the 80th edition of the [Davis Cup](/source/Davis_Cup), the most important tournament between national teams in men's tennis. 88 teams would enter the competition, 16 in the World Group, 20 in the Americas Zone, 20 in the Asia/Oceania Zone, and 32 in the Europe/Africa Zone. [Congo](/source/Congo_Davis_Cup_team), the [Eastern Caribbean](/source/Eastern_Caribbean_Davis_Cup_team), [El Salvador](/source/El_Salvador_Davis_Cup_team) and [Saudi Arabia](/source/Saudi_Arabia_Davis_Cup_team) made their first appearances in the tournament.

This year's tournament saw the [Germany Davis Cup team](/source/Germany_Davis_Cup_team) representing all parts of Germany for the first time since 1939, following the [reunification of West and East Germany into a single German state](/source/German_reunification) in October 1990. The [breakup of Yugoslavia](/source/Breakup_of_Yugoslavia) during the tournament also resulted in impacts for the [Yugoslavia Davis Cup team](/source/Yugoslavia_Davis_Cup_team), after high-profile Croatian players [Goran Ivanišević](/source/Goran_Ivani%C5%A1evi%C4%87) and [Goran Prpić](/source/Goran_Prpi%C4%87) withdrew from the Yugoslav team following [Croatia's declaration of independence](/source/Independence_of_Croatia) in June 1991.[1]

[France](/source/France_Davis_Cup_team) defeated the [United States](/source/United_States_Davis_Cup_team) in the final, held at the [Palais des Sports de Gerland](/source/Palais_des_Sports_de_Gerland) in [Lyon](/source/Lyon), France, on 29 November–1 December, to win their first title since [1932](/source/1932_International_Lawn_Tennis_Challenge) and their 7th title overall.[2][3]
