The 72-lap race was won by Frenchman [Didier Pironi](/source/Didier_Pironi), driving a [Ferrari](/source/Scuderia_Ferrari), with Brazilian [Nelson Piquet](/source/Nelson_Piquet) second in a [Brabham](/source/Brabham)-[BMW](/source/BMW_in_Formula_One) and Finn [Keke Rosberg](/source/Keke_Rosberg) third in a [Williams](/source/Williams_Grand_Prix_Engineering)-[Ford](/source/Ford_Motor_Company).

Start of the race

[René Arnoux](/source/Ren%C3%A9_Arnoux) started from pole position, but he crashed out at the notorious Tarzan Corner when his [Renault](/source/Renault_in_Formula_One)'s throttle stuck open and he hit the tyre barriers. Arnoux walked away from the crash unharmed.

This was the first Grand Prix after the death of [Riccardo Paletti](/source/Riccardo_Paletti) three weeks earlier in [Montreal](/source/Circuit_Gilles_Villeneuve). This was also the final win of [Didier Pironi](/source/Didier_Pironi)'s Formula One career.

Ferrari entered [Patrick Tambay](/source/Patrick_Tambay) to replace [Gilles Villeneuve](/source/Gilles_Villeneuve), who had been killed during qualifying a few race weekends prior, at the [Belgian Grand Prix](/source/1982_Belgian_Grand_Prix).
