International tennis competition

Main article: [1981 Davis Cup](/source/1981_Davis_Cup)

The **Europe Zone** was one of the three regional zones of the [1981 Davis Cup](/source/1981_Davis_Cup).

23 teams entered the Europe Zone in total, split across two sub-zones. With the introduction of a new tiered format, the [previous year's sub-zonal semifinalists](/source/1980_Davis_Cup_Europe_Zone) bypassed Zonal competition and qualified directly for the new 16-team [World Group](/source/1981_Davis_Cup_World_Group). The remaining teams would now compete for two places in the following year's World Group.[1][2][3]

[Spain](/source/Spain_Davis_Cup_team) defeated [Hungary](/source/Hungary_Davis_Cup_team) in the Zone A final, and the [Soviet Union](/source/Soviet_Union_Davis_Cup_team) defeated the [Netherlands](/source/Netherlands_Davis_Cup_team) in the Zone B final, resulting in both Spain and the Soviet Union being promoted to the [1982 World Group](/source/1982_Davis_Cup_World_Group).[4][5]
