# 1981 Davis Cup Eastern Zone > Mediated Wiki article. With the introduction of a new tiered format, the [previous year's semifinalists](/source/1980_Davis_Cup_Eastern_Zone) bypassed Zonal competition and qualified directly for the new 16-team [World Group](/source/1981_Davis_Cup_World_Group).
